Collon House Run 2014

Collon House Run 2014

The Afternoon Run to Collon House on Sunday 27th July 2014 was organised by Alan Caldwell and Desie Boyd. Historic Collon House is situated in the village of Collon in Co. Louth. It is one of the few remaining country long houses still in private hands.

A large turnout of members met at Sprucefield before setting off in two groups, the first lead by Alan and the second group set off with Desie who initially decided a re-routing was called for and aimed towards the M1 before being speedily turned back by Heather Parker.

The first group arrived following a drive with no apparent incidents and were directed into the car park in Collon village leaving them with a short walk to the house. The group very quickly settled down in the relaxing atmosphere enjoying some delicious cakes supported with obligatory tea and coffee before the arrival of Desie’s group.

Alan’s group were then taken for a tour of the house by Michael one of our hosts. The house and Michael’s description of the art work and how some were obtained was an entertaining hour well spent. The second group then had the same treatment before everyone sat down at around 4.30pm to enjoy a country house buffet style 2 course luncheon served by our hosts at Collon House . Served was salmon & ham on the bone with rustic breads, a selection of salads – including a glass or two of red or white wine. Finishing off with strawberries and cream before everyone set off for home.

Unfortunately the drive home was exciting all for the wrong reasons as we experienced torrential down pours on most of the journey and Desie even had to stop and put the car hood up. I think Moffett and Margaret had to do the same although Moffett timed it well parking under a bridge to shelter whilst the hood was erected.

This was a great event, well organised and thanks must go to Alan and Desie for coming up with a day somewhat different than the norm.
