After months of planning the day (Sunday 2nd September 2018) had arrived.
The committee had arrived on site at the Carrickfergus Sailing Club at 8.00am on what was a dry but breezy morning.
Although the main site had been reserved for MG parking only two adjacent sites at Premier Inn and Sainsbury’s car parks at been reserved for all other classic cars.
The stall holders including Belfast Dents Repair, Ellis Auto, Millers Oils and SS Logans Cars were early ‘on the ball’ and gazeboes were quickly erected and goods put on display to tempt potential buyers.
Rambo the dog was also in place on the tractor for those wanting photos with Albert the owner keeping a watchful eye.
The tombola stand was working well and ‘Guess the name of the doll’ was attracting some attention.
The PSNI Mitsubishi Evo had arrived with serious ‘watt’ output.
The glamorous ladies with the collection buckets were out and about and ‘silent’ collection appeared to be the order of the day.
All the funds raised would be donated to the club’s 2018 nominated charity The RVH Liver Support Group. The final cheque would be presented at the ‘Laying Up Run’ on Sunday 23rd September 2018.
A target of 100 MGs was the aim and with the cars starting to arrive the marshals kept a close eye on the total numbers. Eventually a total of 86 MGs had been counted in with at least another 30 classic cars parked at the Premier Inn and Sainsbury’s.
Around 1.00pm Fuzz Townshend arrived and was quickly ushered into the annex where the new MGs were on display, the perfect setting for Fuzz’s initial Q & A session.
Although vice chair Ian Coulter commenced the proceeding with some questions eventually the audience shouted out the questions and Fuzz took control.
Following the Q & A session Deputy Mayor Cheryl Johnston presented Fuzz with a gift to enable him to recall his visit to Carrickfergus although some ‘hints’ he dropped suggested he would be back sooner that we had anticipated!
Fuzz then spent an hour walking round the cars and meeting as many people that he could. He was quite happy to take the time to have photos taken and sign autographs. The booklet which had been presented to all drivers who had entered on the day was an ideal base for the autograph.
A great day! Significant positive feedback from various members of the public and also clubs who had attended was received.
Now we need to decide, will this be an annual event shared again between the MG Owners’ Club Northern Ireland and Ulster Centre MGCC?
